We may go through periods in our lives when we are not at peace. When anxiety, worry, fear or regret about the past comes to the surface. Often a sad memory will just pop up into the mind and we don’t even know where it came from. As spiritual seekers we may be dismayed when this happens, but Jesus tells us that this is an essential part of the awakening process.

In “Dark Night of the Soul,” by Pamela Kribbe, which is an absorbing, partly-channelled book, Jesus tells us in Part II, Section 10, (Kindle edition): “Unresolved or pent up emotions are as lost children who want to come Home. If they are not allowed to be present in your awareness, they cannot be healed and transformed. The soul strives toward wholeness on every level, and this is only possible when everything that lives in darkness is allowed to come into the light.” That last sentence shows us why it is important not to try to suppress negative emotions, but to bring them into our awareness for healing. Once we are away of them, we can try to determine their root cause and we should, then, be able to release them.

In A Course in Miracles, Chapter 14, Section 7, Jesus tells us pretty much the same thing: “The Holy Spirit asks of you but this; bring to Him every secret you have locked away from Him. Open every door to Him, and bid Him enter the darkness and lighten it away. At your request He enters gladly. He brings the light to darkness if you make the darkness open to Him. But what you hide He cannot look upon…” Text, p. 288.

In practical terms, this means we acknowledge every sad or unpleasant emotion, when we notice it, and we call upon the Holy Spirit/Higher Self to turn our thoughts to right-minded thoughts, i.e. to help us perceive that emotion in a different way, to perceive it from His perspective. Then we have to forgive ourselves for those emotions (and others who may be involved) and release them. But we do this in a loving way without blaming ourselves or others, and without feeling guilty. If we do this consistently throughout our lives, it could bring about the Atonement. Speaking about the Holy Spirit, Who is our Guide, Jesus continues: “He will surely lead you to where God and His Son await your recognition. They are joined in giving you the gift of oneness, before which all separation vanishes…” Text, p. 290.
