August 2019

I was walking through a forest of evergreens recently, on a cloudy, dark day. There was very little light in the forest but in the distance, I could see a shaft of bright light, as the sun began to shine beyond the trees. I said to myself, ‘I am walking out of the darkness, into the light.’ Then I thought how symbolical this was of the journey we are all on, as we awaken to the truth.

Jesus speaks about our journey from darkness to Light in A Course in Miracles, Section III, Chapter 11. He refers to fear and grief as our “dark companions,” on that journey. “Fear and grief are your guests, and they go with you and abide with you on the way. But the dark journey is not the way of God’s Son. Walk in light and do not see the dark companions, for they are not fit companions for the Son of God, who was created of light and in light.” Text, p. 199.

Jesus then reminds us that the darkness we have created is unreal, “…When you wander, you but undertake a journey that is not real. The dark companions, the dark way, are all illusions. Turn toward the light, for the little spark in you is part of a light so great that it can sweep you out of all darkness forever.”

And that’s where our hope lies—the little divine spark that exists in all of us. It is that spark that impels us to find a spiritual path that will ultimately take us out of darkness and into the Light forever.
