There is so much wisdom in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda.
Something that resonated with me is the following: “Human life is beset with sorrow
until we know how to tune in with the Divine Will, whose ‘right course’ is often baffling
to the egoistic intelligence”
That may sound rather depressing, but life is full of ups
and downs, the good and the bad, etc. However, by seeking inner guidance,
Yogananda is telling us we can receive help from God and, “…adopt the right course
in everything, even in minor details.”

This is very similar to the teachings of A Course in Miracles, (ACIM), which
constantly tells us to tune into God by listening to the Holy Spirit, our connection to
God. “The Holy Spirit is in you in a very literal sense. His is the Voice that calls you
back to where you were before and will be again…”
Text p.75. Jesus is referring to
how we were before the separation from God. On page 76, we read: “The Holy Spirit
is your Guide in choosing. He is in the part of your mind that always speaks for the
right choice, because He speaks for God…”

The difficulty is knowing how to calm the egoic mind and be still enough to listen to
our inner guidance and remembering to do so. Sometimes, when I am not sure what
to say to someone, I quickly ask for inner guidance and then speak. Also, if I am
unsure about a decision I need to make, I ask and listen to what immediately pops
into my mind. Moreover, one can ask for guidance and open a spiritual text at
random and see what stands out. There are many ways of tuning into the Divine Will,
and one can be sure that anything we receive will be peaceful and loving. If it is not,
then it the ego speaking yet again.
